Preparing for your survey

Before you begin please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the devices

To ensure your survey produces usable data, avoid placing the devices near

Running water
Roads or machinery
Electrical transformers or substations
Direct prevailing wind (face the unit away from the wind direction)

A device to capture latitude and longitude in decimal degrees format, to at least 4 decimal places, e.g., GPS-capable smartphone or standalone GPS device
A pencil to complete the datasheet

Survey Instructions

Preparation

1. Before the attaching the device, ensure it is operating correctly by switching it on and checking the LED status light is flashing red or green. Please check the LED status using the image below.

Set Up and Survey

2. Thread the Velcro strap through the slots, keeping the textured side facing outwards.

3. Secure the device to a tree or post roughly 8-12 cm wide at head height. Tighten the strap the strap as much as possible to ensure the unit remains in a fixed position throughout the survey. Make a note of the GPS location for each device.

‍IMPORTANT! ‍Place units as high as safely possible on sturdy branches or posts. This prevents large animals from reaching or damaging them. 1m - 2m from the ground is advisable. Please only place the units at a greater height if it is safe to do so. Choose locations away from public paths to avoid tampering. If working near livestock, mount units outside fenced areas to minimize interference.

Take Down and Return

‍4. Once your survey is complete, take the device down and switch it to OFF.

‍5. Remove the strap and place the devices back into the original box along with the filled out datasheet. Secure the box with tape.

‍6. When you are ready to return the devices, contact our support team who will arrange for the collection and the transport of the devices back to NatureMetrics.

Final Check List

The unit is switched on
The LED lights have been checked
The device has been deployed correctly and can be safely retrieved
The original packaging has been kept to return the devices
