What you get
with Soil ECI

Site-level
diagnostics

Know exactly what's working and what's not. If fungi are lagging but bacteria are strong, you know to add woody debris. If nitrogen-fixing bacteria are weak, adjust your planting mix.

Portfolio
intelligence

See your nature performance and impacts across all sites. Track whether you're Net Positive or Net Loss. Identify which sites need resources. Report to your board with one scientifically backed number.

Financial
integration

Feed ECI data directly into Natural Capital Accounts, rehabilitation provisions, ESG disclosures, and
risk assessments. Connect ecosystem health to financial metrics.

The gold standard in ecosystem
condition and resilience measurement

NatureMetrics Soil Ecosystem Condition Index is currently the only globally applicable metric for assessing soil microbial condition. The soil microbe methodology has been independently accredited by Accounting for Nature (AfN-METHOD-M-01) with an accuracy level of 95%, enabling its use in Certified Environmental Accounts under the  Accounting for Nature® Framework to support credible claims on soil microbial condition.

Accreditation was awarded following an independent review by Accounting for Nature's Independent Science Committee, confirming that the Method meets the required high standards of scientific rigour. Accounting for Nature is a globally recognised standard that supports credible, transparent, and science-based environmental condition accounting, providing a robust foundation for clear and defensible claims.

The Challenge

Will we get closure approval?

Can we prove our rehabilitation is working?

What's our NNL/NPI position?

How Soil ECI solves it:

Track rehabilitation from disturbance to closure target

Example: Year 0: 30% ECI → Year 5: 68% ECI → Target Year 10: 80% ECI. You can model the trajectory and enter closure approvals with confidence.

Prove NNL/NPI with a defensible ledger

Example: -65 Soil Quality Hectares (SQH) at pit + 80 SQH at offset = +15 SQH Net Positive. One number your board, regulator, and community can all understand.

Optimise offsets based on actual performance

Stop hoping your compensation sites work. Measure them.

The Challenge

Is our regenerative agriculture program actually working?

Can we prove it without greenwashing risk?

How Soil ECI solves it:

Verify regeneration with measurable outcomes

Example: Conventional baseline 40% ECI → Regenerative (5 years) 68% ECI. Prove soil health is improving, not just practices adopted.

De-risk supply chains by mapping ecosystem degradation

Identify sourcing regions with <30% ECl before yields collapse.

Give farmers actionable insights

The biological breakdown tells them exactly what to adjust.

Access green finance with auditable MRV

Use ECI as KPI for sustainability-linked loans: "Achieve 50% average ECI by 2028"

The Challenge

Will our route avoid the most sensitive areas?

Can we prove our mitigation and offsets are delivering?

How Soil ECI solves it:

Evidence-based avoidance

Assess ecosystem condition along potential corridors before design lock-in. Identify high-value areas requiring route adjustment. Demonstrate to statutory consultees that sensitive sites were genuinely avoided.

Real-time impact minimisation

Quarterly monitoring during construction vs annual surveys. Rapid detection of unexpected impacts → intervention before regulatory breach. Prove to communities and regulators that impacts are contained as promised.

Offset validation over time

Monitor offset site performance over multi-decade agreements. Early warning of offset failure → intervention before non-compliance. Demonstrate portfolio-level net gain: "Despite 10km of new road, our ecosystem condition improved."

The Challenge

Did our restoration work?

Can we prove impact to donors and unlock outcome-based funding?

How Soil ECI solves it:

Prove impact with quantified outcomes

Example: Baseline 35% ECI → Year 5: 65% ECI = 30 percentage points improvement. Show donors ecosystem function improved, not just trees planted.

Adaptive management based on what works

ECI breakdown shows why some sites recover faster. Replicate success

Unlock PES and biodiversity credits.

Quality Hectares provide the MRV framework for payment.

The Challenge

How do we differentiate beyond price and win higher-value work?

How Soil ECI solves it:

Offer accredited metrics with end-to-end technical support

We handle the survey design, lab analysis, and complex data processing so you can focus on delivering high-level strategic advice.

Transform your service offering

Transition from one-off transactional surveys to securing long-term, multi-year monitoring contracts. Build enduring client partnerships based on longitudinal data.

Win on technical credibility

"We use the only AfN-accredited soil ecosystem metric" wins proposals and establishes immediate scientific authority.

The Science

Three communities. One index.
Portfolio Intelligence.

Bacteria

The foundation of soil fertility and nutrients availability. Important for:

  • Nutrient cycling (N,P,C)
  • Nitrogen Fixation (Rhizoium, Azotobactor)
  • Organic matter decomposition
  • Disease suppression
  • Soil pH regulation

Fungi

Architects of soil structure andplant partnerships. Important for:

  • Soil aggregate formation
  • Water retention and infiltration
  • Mycorrhizal networks (95% of plants depend on these)
  • Carbon Sequestration
  • Nutrient transport to plants

Invertebrates

Engineers of ecosystem complexity and resilience. Important for:

  • Soil aeration and porosity
  • Food web complexity indicators
  • Bioturbation (mixing of soil layers)
  • Predator-prey dynamics
  • Ecosystem resilience signals
