The health of our rivers is intimately linked with biodiversity.

We help water companies and stewards of our rivers to better understand their impact on the health and biodiversity of these precious ecosystems. We can identify Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) and Species of Conservation Concern as well as identifying whole communities of fish, mammals and aquatic invertebrates across whole catchments.

We can also identify pollution levels and impacts associated with water company infrastructure. Our monthly PollutionTracker service enables water companies to obtain detailed information on the microbiome of water at different points within the catchment. Identifying areas of high impact or concern and enabling the tracking of progress to mitigate impacts and deliver nature positive outcomes.

PollutionTracker

Biodiversity has a big role to play in our supply of water. From natural chalk streams providing filtration to protecting key species for ecosystem functioning, it is important to understand the biodiversity of aquatic systems.

As water sector companies balance increased demand with the move towards net zero 2030, it is essential to find innovative solutions that provide increased sampling resolution and reduced sampling effort and cost.

Our environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring approach helps managers make more informed decisions to effectively mitigate impacts, while reducing effort, costs and safety risks commonly associated with conventional biodiversity monitoring survey methods.
Our simple-to-use sampling kits can be used by staff or contractors on the ground to assess biodiversity and monitor for protected and invasive aquatic vertebrate, invertebrate species.

If engaging local communities is a priority for you, you can use our citizen science capability to really involve them on the journey.

  • INNS / native species detection to allow earlier prevention of INNS from threatening native populations or affecting water quality.

  • Monitoring to manage the risk of spreading INNS from water supply infrastructure.

  • Monitoring for water quality by detecting harmful bacteria and algal blooms as well as diseases such as Chytrid fungus and Crayfish Plague.

  • Freshwater biosecurity monitoring (at key entry points) and reinforcement.

  • Detecting the spread of species that have an impact on operational functionality and infrastructure needs.

  • PollutionTracker uses cutting-edge DNA technology and data analytics to enable water companies to monitor and map water pollution to assess its impact on rivers and waterways. The monthly monitoring service gives water companies improved insight into the scope and scale of the pollution problem, to target high-priority areas and demonstrate measurable improvements over time.
