Powerful data on ocean biodiversity delivered using DNA

Rapid biodiversity surveys

Comprehensive biodiversity data

Better decisions for business, people and nature
DNA-based methods bring biodiversity monitoring into the twenty-first century, providing a solution fit for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Generate detailed biodiversity data to create baselines, monitor impact and evaluate restoration efforts nearly anywhere in the world.
We work on projects including:

Include DNA-based biodiversity monitoring in your ecological survey design with NatureMetrics
DNA-based monitoring with NatureMetrics
NatureMetrics makes eDNA surveys easy. Our end-to-end service includes easy-to-use sampling kits, logistics support, laboratory analysis and data processing. We provide professional reports and support with interpretation and data analysis where required.
Our expert team can also help you design an eDNA sampling campaign to suit your project’s location and needs, and we can provide training for your staff and contractors, either online, in person or on-site – get in touch to find out more.
Additional services, such as ecological statistics and mapping, may be added at any time during the project. We can work with you to understand how to use our data to feed into your wider environmental strategy.
Samples you can send to our labs for analysis include:
You can survey the biodiversity in your project sites with the NatureMetrics tried and tested DNA services. We’ve already worked with leaders in the rail industry, and our sampling kits are simple to use and include everything you need to start sampling right away. Our team will work with you to understand your aims, enabling you to build a suite of tools that fit your specific needs for the duration of your project.

Case Study: Bigger, better data sets with lower risks to field team
NatureMetrics worked with AquaBiota to survey Swedish fishes across 17 marine sites using environmental DNA (eDNA) and 45 sites using netting techniques. Our eDNA surveys detected more species than 30+ years of netting data had captured in these marine environments, particularly in offshore locations where netting is less efficient. This cost-efficient survey demonstrated the power of DNA for acquiring large scale, robust datasets for reporting to local and regional boards.

“Anchor Environmental Consultants worked with NatureMetrics to conduct eDNA sampling for a range of aquatic habitats throughout Africa. NatureMetrics provided eDNA sampling kits and advice on sampling design in the field. eDNA services in South Africa are extremely limited, and we felt NatureMetrics was the best company to work with. This turned out to be true – We had a great experience and will definitely continue to partner with NatureMetrics in the future.”
At NatureMetrics, we are proud to be making waves in the marine sector. Our own founder and CTO, Dr Kat Bruce, is leading the drafting of a European Standard for water sampling for eDNA analysis and managing the development of a working group on field and lab samples in the EU COST Action Project, DNAquaNet. We also recently developed a subtidal benthic DNA sampling protocol as requested by Natural England, based on a review of scientific literature as well as our experience across a range of projects.
One of our current joint projects is with the Scottish Government and several partners extending to 2022. The aims of this project are to use DNA-based methods for habitat characterisation. We have also recently joined the Society for Underwater Technology having been invited to speak about the opportunities for DNA-based biomonitoring in the marine environment by the Marine Environmental Science Special Interest Group.
